The Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership has announced that the new coastal defenses at Anchorage Park are open for the public.
“Over the past six months we have achieved a great deal and have completed the coastal defense works, forming the first phase of the wider North Portsea Island scheme ,” the Partnership said.
“Our new embankments and rock revetments provide a 1:500 year standard of protection, which is one of the highest in the country outside of London.”
The major coastal defense project was undertaken by Team Van Oord and included areas along the north of Portsea Island between Ports Creek Railway Bridge and Kendall’s Wharf.
The rock was imported from Larvik in Norway and has been specially selected due to its strength, weather resistance and durability.
This is the first stage of the multi-million pound Flooding and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Scheme being developed across the north of Portsea Island.
The wider scheme will reduce the risk of flooding and erosion from the sea to 4,200 homes, 500 businesses and critical infrastructure including the Eastern Road over the next 100 years.
