New York State Senator Tim Kennedy and New York State Assemblyman Sean Ryan joined City of Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown last week to announce nearly $1.9 million in funding to help clean up and improve the water quality of Scajaquada Creek.
The Buffalo Sewer Authority will be receiving $1,815,000 from the Green Innovation Grant Program (GIGP), a program of the Environmental Facilities Corporation, for the Scajaquada Creek Restoration Project.
Assemblyman Sean Ryan said: “ We recently joined with Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper to launch an effort to restore Scajaquada Creek. The creek is a symbol of what can happen when we don’t focus our attention on improving water quality and protecting our natural resources. We need to transform Scajaquada Creek into the incredible waterway we know it can be.”
“ Our waterfront and waterways are our most valuable natural resource, and the restoration of them needs to be both a regional and state priority,” said Senator Tim Kennedy . “ For too long, our polluted waterways have been waiting on action, and today, New York State demonstrated that it is committed to helping the Town as it takes a significant step towards remediation. ”
The project will help mitigate flooding and improve water quality between Main Street and Elmwood Avenue in the City of Buffalo. GIGP funds will support restoration of the creek, the floodplain and submerged and emergent wetland areas adjacent to the creek.
