The City of Muscatine Public Works Department has just completed its harbor dredging program planned for this autumn, removing all debris from the harbor floor.
The harbor and marina, located by Riverside Park on the mighty Mississippi River, is dredged once or twice each year in order to keep the harbor safe and accessible for boats.
Dredging is usually done in the fall and spring when harbor is free of boats and docks can easily be removed for the works.
The dredged material was collected and transferred via pipeline to the nearby site where it will stay in geo-bags and dried for further use, often as fill dirt.
The buildup that makes dredging necessary is caused because there is no water flow throughout the harbor, which brings the debris in, but can’t carry it back out.
