Congressman Frank Pallone kicked off the start of the final phase of a federally funded beach replenishment project from Sea Bright to Manasquan earlier this week.
He was joined at the press conference by Col. David Caldwell, Commander of the New York District of the Army Corps of Engineers.
This final phase will cover the area stretching from Lake Takanassee in Elberon to Philips Avenue in Deal. The $86,722,210 in funding for this project is part of the Sandy aid package that Congressman Pallone fought for in Congress.
“ The completion of this project will not only replenish, protect and maintain our beaches, it will be an encouraging marker of our ongoing efforts to rebuild our coastline stronger and more resilient than before Sandy hit ,” said Congressman Pallone.
“We waged a hard fight in Congress for Sandy relief funding, and I am glad that significant and well-deserved funds have come home to help our beaches – a fundamental part of life for residents and the tourist economy.”
The project will cover the placement of 3 million cubic yards of sand for reconstruction of the shoreline. It also includes lengthening 10 existing stormwater outfalls, and notching a groin at Phillips Avenue.
Earlier this year, the first phase of the replenishment project – from Philips Avenue in Deal to Loch Arbour – began and is now being completed.
Originally, the Army Corps had planned to notch six groins, also known as jetties, between Elberon and Loch Arbour.
