After the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers refused to stop Lake Erie sediment dumping, Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge released the following statement:
“I am deeply disappointed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ decision to reject the Port of Cleveland’s request and continue its push to dump potentially harmful sediment from the Cuyahoga River into Lake Erie.”

“The Lake provides drinking water to millions of people, supports thousands of jobs, and contributes over $1 billion to our local economies. Dumping sediment into Lake Erie is unacceptable and must be stopped to ensure the health and safety of all Ohioans.”
Congresswoman Fudge, along with Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, Congressman Bob Gibbs, Congressman Tim Ryan, Congressman David P. Joyce and Congressman James Renacci, sent a letter to the U.S. Army Corps expressing support for the Port of Cleveland and their plan modification to permanently stop sediment dumping in Lake Erie in November 2015.
Following recent disputes over how dredged material should be disposed, the Port’s proposal would bring stability to this process and improve water quality for all Ohioans.
