The Coney Island T-groin Project, located in Sea Gate, Brooklyn, NY is nearing its completion.
Andrew Masella, civil engineer, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, in this video discusses the importance of the projects features and benefits the community of Sea Gate will receive after the construction of the T-groins.
The Coney Island scheme consists of approximately three miles of storm damage reduction to the densely populated communities and infrastructure along the shoreline of Coney Island.
This is a long-standing Army Corps project that will construct a series of T-Groin rock jetties to protect the peninsula and prevent further erosion that has long plagued the shoreline since 1992 and was made significantly worse during Superstorm Sandy.
The program also includes the placement of roughly 125,000 cubic yards of sand, with sand coming from the Gravesend Bay side of Sea Gate as well as dredged from the Rockaway Inlet Federal Navigation Channel.
