Heavy security measures have been adopted in Port Said ahead of the opening of the East Port Said Canal, scheduled for Wednesday, February 24, 2016.

The canal opening ceremony will be attended by Prime Minister Sherif Ismail, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority Mohab Mamish and several ministers, governors and ambassadors.

In statements to the Middle East News Agency, Assistant Interior Minister, Mahmoud el Deeb, said that security measures were intensified all over the governorate and along the navigation line of the Suez Canal.

Mamish added that the East Port Said Canal extends from the northern entrance of the Suez Canal at the Mediterranean Sea for 9.5 km.

After dredging of nearly 12.5 million cubic meters of soil at a cost of $37 million, the new waterway reached a depth of 18.5 meters.

The new branch canal aims to ease the entrance and exit of vessels arriving to and from East Port Said Harbor.
