The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District, announced two days ago that test results of samples taken from the bottom of the Cuyahoga River shipping channel were clean enough to allow open-lake disposal of dredged sediment.
In an open letter to Lake Erie stakeholders, Lt. Col. Karl Jansen , the commander of the USACE Buffalo District, said that a review of data collected by the Ohio EPA in October found evidence that the sediment has improved enough to allow safe open-lake disposal.
The USACE, Buffalo District, will host a public hearing March 1, 2016 at the Breen Center in Cleveland, OH.
The purpose of the public hearing is to provide an opportunity to anyone wishing to make verbal comments regarding the proposed open lake placement of sediment dredged from the upper federal navigation channel of the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland Harbor.
Port of Cleveland President and CEO Will Friedman released a written response yesterday criticizing the Army Corps’ “ misguided campaign “, Cleveland.com reports.
He urged the public to attend the March 1 hearing to express their opposition to the Corps’ plan.
