Shoalhaven City Council will start the dredging operations around Sussex Inlet and Lake Conjola from Monday 7 March.
A significant amount of sand will be removed from the Riviera Keys, Sussex Inlet Channel and Lake Conjola while the Currambene Creek scheme will involve rock removal operations.
The project also includes beach nourishment and protection works along Sussex Inlet Channel and Blackwater Creek in Mollymook.
Mayor Joanna Gash said that the work at Cater Island will be a trial and demonstration of the proposed methodology for the broader Riviera Keys project.
“The Cater Island works will involve dredging the existing sand within the canal, filtering the sand through a centrifuge and then placing the now clean sand along the revetment walls ,” said Clr Gash.
“While it is anticipated that the placed sand will initially have some discolouration, it is expected to whiten over a matter of weeks after its placement and be aesthetically acceptable to Council and the community.”
“Cater Island works are anticipated to take up to three weeks, depending on the condition of the material found during the dredging.”
Dredging works at Lake Conjola are to be undertaken concurrently with the Sussex Inlet works, with the site being set up from 14 March 2016. Dredging is due to start immediately after Easter and is expected to take up to eight weeks.
