The South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism (SCPRT) is calling for dredging and beach nourishment project in Beaufort County, South Carolina.
SCPRT recently submitted an application to the Department of the Army and the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control for a permit to perform dredging and beach nourishment, using sand from two offshore borrow areas near the shoreline of Hunting Island State Park on Hunting Island.
According to SCPRT, the work will consist of dredging, beach nourishment and construction of two low profile sheet pile groins.
In detail the proposed work consists of placing up to 635,000 cubic yards of beach-quality sand along 9,200 linear feet of ocean shoreline at Hunting Island State Park via hydraulic dredge. The sand will be removed by cutterhead dredge and pumped onto the beach through a pipeline.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District, is soliciting comments from the public in order to consider and evaluate the impacts of the proposed project. The deadline for sending comments is March 31st 2105.
