Across the state, lakes operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Huntington District, are kept at winter pool level – lower than normal, to allow more room for storing water when the Spring rains arrive.
At Burnsville Lake in Burnsville, West Virginia, crews have been taking advantage of the lower levels to get ready for the summer season.
On March 7, 2016, the Corps worked with the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the U.S. Army National Guard unit in Buckhannon, to dredge the Riffle Run Day Use Area Boat Launch Ramp located behind the Burnsville Dam.
The DNR rented an excavator with a maximum reach of 60 feet to gain access to the silt around the boat launch ramp.
On average the Corps and National Guard dump trucks hauled 12 loads of silt away from the boat launch ramp. Each load of silt weighs about 20,000 pounds per truck load.
Now that the dredging is completed, fishermen will soon be able to launch fishing boats at the Riffle Run Day Use Area Boat Launch.
