Great Lakes Dredge & Dock of Oak Brook, Illinois is about to start one more season – the third of six – of clearing out sediment from the bottom of Lake Decatur.

According to Engineering Services Coordinator Jerry Stevens, crews have been working this week to reassemble the dredge operation as they prepare to resume dredging Friday, April 1st.

“ We have about three more months in the Big Creek Basin, and we will also start in Sand Creek, which will take about a year to complete, ” Stevens said to a local news site.

So far, the dredging crews have removed around 2.8 million cubic yards of sediment out of the planned 10 million cubic yards.

By the time the project wraps up in 2019, Lake Decatur should have an increased water capacity of 30 percent, which equals about 72 days of additional drinking water.
