Hillsborough County Conservation & Environmental Lands Management has just announced that they will close the Apollo Beach Nature Preserve to protect public safety during the dredging phase of the Apollo Beach shoreline restoration project.
Beginning April 11, dredging activity will take place at the north, south and main channels to facilitate safe boating and to create a two-acre beach within the preserve.
The closure of the preserve will allow heavy equipment to be safely used for the dredging phase.
Hillsborough County is partnering with the Apollo Beach Waterway Improvement Group (ABWIG) to mitigate erosion at the Apollo Beach Nature Preserve.
As part of the project, eight lime rock breakwaters have been installed to reduce wave energy, minimize erosion and reduce the amount of sediment washing into the boat channel.
The project also includes dune restoration, living shoreline and a designed area for beach fill.
The preserve is expected to reopen by June 21.
