A massive land reclamation scheme around the Chek Lap Kok Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), aimed to enable the addition of the third runway, has received the green light.

The works, being carried out on behalf of the Hong Kong Airport Authority (HKAA), include formation of 650 ha of land by ground improvement and seabed filling, seawall construction, approach lights and beacons, and diversion of one set of existing 11 kV, 6 km-long submarine cables.

The HKAA will start work at the earliest opportunity and the entire three-runway system project is expected to take about eight years to complete.

This expansion program, designed by Mott MacDonald, will allow 620,000 flight movements, enabling over 102 million passengers and approximately nine million tonnes of cargo to pass through the airport every year.
