The City of Renton (WA) is working on a project that will dredge 1.25-mile stretch of the lower Cedar River this summer, reducing the risk of seasonal flooding in the area.
The city has selected the Coast and Harbor Engineering (CHE) team to assist with planning, permitting, developing plans and specifications for the Cedar River Maintenance Dredge Project.
According to the officials, the project is expected to cost somewhere between $7.8 million – $8.6 million.
The purpose of the Cedar River Maintenance Dredge Project is to perform future maintenance dredging in the lower Cedar River from the mouth of the Cedar River to the Williams Street Bridge in order to reduce flood risks to private, public, and commercial properties.
This project includes removing river sediments of approximately four feet settled in the channel, repairing unstable banks developed since the last dredging, replanting, exporting sediments offsite, and removing invasive vegetation in areas adjacent to the levee and floodwall. The project will also include a mitigation element to be determined during the permitting process.
The scheme – funded by the King County Flood Control District’s (KCFCD) Capital Improvement Project budget and the City’s KCFCD Opportunity Fund – is anticipated to be constructed between June 15 and August 31, 2016.
