A major £1.95 million scheme to maintain coastal defenses and protect local homes has been completed at Kingsdown beach – with the placement of 16 new timber groynes and around 50,000 m³ of recycled shingle.
The scheme was managed by Dover District Council and funded by the Environment Agency.
This coastal program was designed through the East Kent Engineering Partnership and approved by the Marine Management Organization.
Martin Legatt, DDC Head of Assets & Building Control , said: “ We are very pleased to see this major scheme in Kingsdown completed. Coastal protection and flood defenses are vital for the safety of residents and the future of the district, and we continue to work closely with the EA and other partners to help protect the district.”
The works are in line with the Pegwell Bay to Kingsdown Flood and Erosion Risk Management Strategy.
This recommends the repair and renewal of the timber groynes and continued beach recycling. The strategy recommends groyne renewal by 2018, which was brought forward due to the condition of the previous groynes.
