Emergency dredging works involving the removal of silt and debris from the port entrance have been successfully completed, the Port of Workington said in its latest announcement.
Two dredgers were employed from January to April to remove the estimated 100,000 m³ of material washed down by the River Derwent.
The cost of the dredging works amounted to just over £1 million and was funded by the Port’s Insurance Policy.
Further work is required to repair infrastructure damage to the rock revetment on Merchants Quay, which was undermined by the force of the flood water.
Repair works estimated at £250,000 are planned for next year.
The port handles around 300,000 tonnes of cargo per annum with about 250 vessel movements and its principal cargo handling facilities are centered on the Prince of Wales Dock.
This modern enclosed dock has a total water area of 2.6 hectares and quay frontage of 773 m providing 7 berths plus a ro-ro facility.
