With a PCB clean-up project currently underway, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources authorities are urging boaters to treat the Fox River in Green Bay like a construction zone.
“It’s a very congested waterway, and with the dredging project, it’s that much more congested, ” said Darren Kuhn, D.N.R. Conservation Warden.
“There’s submerged pipes, on-the-bottom pipes, there’s pipes that are floating just below the surface, and even floating on the surface, ” said Kuhn for Fox 11 News.
Dustin Bauman, J.F. Brennan Co. Project Manager , added that around 10 working platforms are on the river at the moment.
“And we have 12-15 john boats, and work boats that are moving throughout the river that tend to equipment ,” he said. “ We’ve had very few incidents where the boaters have hit the pipeline, and we’re actually currently two years without having an accident.”
The Fox River Cleanup Project is designed to reduce risk to human health and the environment due to the presence of PCBs in Fox River sediment. It’s a multi-year cleanup effort that includes dredging, capping and covering over a 13-mile stretch of the Lower Fox River.
The project officially started with dredging and processing on April 28, 2009.
