Townsville City Council will conduct top-up sand renourishment works on Horseshoe Bay and Nelly Bay beaches this month as part of an ongoing program to combat erosion on the island.
The Nelly Bay works will happen from June 6-10 and the Horseshoe Bay works will happen from June 13-17, reported the City Council.
At Horseshoe Bay council will shift shallow-scraped sand from where it has been accumulating at the eastern end of the bay, to the beach-front at the eastern end of Pacific Drive.
The Nelly Bay work will see accumulated sand transferred from the Sooning St bridge sand trap and lower reaches of Gustav Creek to the Nelly Bay beach.
Community Health and Environment Committee chair, Ann-Maree Greaney, said that the replenishment project was part of on-going erosion mitigation works carried out on the island.
“ Most of Magnetic Island is national park, so conserving the island and its picture perfect beaches is a top priority for council, ” Cr Greaney said. “ This work is necessary for riverine and coastal protection and to maintain the public beaches and we ask residents to be patient through this period.”
Residents and visitors are urged to take care in the area while machinery is operating.
