The Virginia Port Authority Board in Norfolk has awarded Middlesex County a $118,000 grant for dredging the mouth and channel leading into Jackson Creek in Deltaville, according to the Southside Sentinel.

Commenting this, Middlesex County Administrator, Matt Walker , said that the grant is going to cover most of the cost of dredging.

“We were up against some heavy hitters. Cape Charles was requesting $500,000 from the [Port] Authority and only received $50,000. I think we were the only community to get the total amount we requested,” Walker added.

The funding stipulates that the dredging has to be done in the “ federal congressional designated channel”, the Sentinel informs.

This is a second phase of the Jackson Creek dredge project. The first phase was done in 2013 at a cost of $102,570.

The funding for that project came from a Port Authority Grant and public and private sources.
