Shoalhaven City Council is inviting community participation in three community workshops about how Council should manage coastal storm damage in the Shoalhaven, as part of its “ Our Coast, Our Lifestyle ” community engagement project.
Mayor Joanna Gash said that the recent storm has demonstrated that damage can occur at any time and Council needs to understand community views so it can respond appropriately to weather events.
“ This is serious issue for our community and the recent storm event has illustrated the importance of coastal management on a broad scale ,” said Clr Gash .
“ The risk of coastal erosion threatens community facilities and infrastructure, such as beaches, beach access, parks, roads and sewers, as well as private and commercial property, along our coastline, with a potentially negative impact on the tourism industry and our lifestyle. ”
“ Coastal management is expensive and Council is seeking to understand community preferences for different management options, and in what circumstances those options were supported, so that it can prioritize actions to appropriately manage coastal risks and respond to coastal storm damage. ”
