Member for Bass, Andrew Nikolic, has announced that a re-elected Turnbull Government would provide $250,000 to extend Launceston’s system of flood levees to Newstead.

The Turnbull Government’s $250,000 commitment will be matched by Launceston City Council, for a total investment of $500,000.

“ When Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited Launceston to inspect flood damage two weeks ago, he was very impressed with the work of the Launceston Flood Authority to protect our city, ” Mr Nikolic said.

“ During that visit I raised with the Prime Minister the urgent need for action to protect homes and businesses in unprotected areas of Newstead.

“Malcolm Turnbull immediately agreed and I am very grateful for his quick response to my request that has enabled me to work with Council and the LFA to conclude this agreement.

“Launceston City Council and the LFA have confirmed that this new work on the Newstead component of the levees is an essential addition to Launceston’s flood protection. ”

Mr Nikolic said that he had worked closely with the Launceston City Council and the LFA during the last five years to support a healthier Tamar River and enhance the city’s flood protection.
