The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, has awarded a contract in the amount of approximately $4.6 to RLB Contracting Inc., for underwater demolition and debris removal from the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) and Galveston Causeway.
The contractor is required to remove underwater structures, including concrete, steel, wood and various other underwater debris located at the intersection of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and the Galveston Causeway (Interstate 45) and the associated railroad trestle bridge beginning July 2016 with an estimated completion date of December 2016.
“This contract will remove considerable amounts of remnant structure that have been installed in the water since the Galveston Causeway’s initial construction in the early 1900’s including fendering systems and concrete pilings ,” said Seth Jones, GIWW operations manager with the USACE Galveston District’s Navigation Branch.
“With the recent construction of the new causeway and trestle bridges, we now have wider bridge spans which will allow us to maintain the GIWW at its full authorized width once the navigation hazards have been cleared.”
The GIWW was established to provide commercial navigation, support for and encouragement of interstate commerce, safe harbor for shipping from inclement weather and protection for shipping from wartime enemy attack and remains an essential component of the state’s and nation’s transportation network.
