The Liberal National Government has allocated $750,295 to local authorities for projects aimed at protecting the Western Australian coastline.
Acting Transport Minister, John Day, said that the 2016-17 Coastal Adaptation and Protection (CAP) grants would benefit 13 urgent coastal management projects, located between Geraldton and Esperance, with funds allocated for construction, design, monitoring or investigation work.
“The largest funding allocation of $300,000 was provided to the City of Wanneroo to construct coastal management structures and undertake sand replacement at Quinns Beach, as part of the first stage of a long-term coastal management strategy for the area ,” Mr Day said.
“The City of Albany has received $122,495 for beach monitoring, the collection of detailed data and sand replacement works as part of the Emu Point to Middleton Beach Coastal Adaptation and Protection Strategy.”
“The coastline is one of the State’s most valuable assets and CAP grants foster a partnership between State and local government in working together to protect it, ” Mr Day added.
“The projects will provide a better understanding of coastal processes and ensure public coastal assets are protected from the impacts of ocean forces into the future.”
The CAP grants program is administered by the Department of Transport, which also provides coastal engineering support and guidance to local governments who manage most of the WA coast.
