Raymond Brown Construction and Mott MacDonald have won the ICE Wales Cymru’s Roy Edwards Award, which celebrates the best examples of outstanding design and construction for projects valued at under £3 million, for the Rhiwbina Flood Defense Scheme.
The project, which was undertaken on behalf of Cardiff City Council, is an environmentally-sensitive scheme that set out to provide protection from fluvial flooding from the Whitchurch Brook in Rhiwbina, North Cardiff.
Divisional Director, Andrew Eilbeck said: “ Winning this award is a tremendous achievement for our construction business. I am delighted that the efforts of the team to deliver the scheme to an exceptional standard have been recognised by ICE Wales Cymru.”
This project involved the construction of low level flood walls and culvert installation along the boundaries of residential properties; ecological survey work; localized realignment and widening of the watercourse; earth bunds and a large attenuation pond with associated drainage works downstream.
The scheme was designed to contain fluvial flooding up to a 1 in 100 year event (plus an allowance for climate change) and increase capacity and flow within the brook, enabling surplus flow to be attenuated off-line and away from residential areas.
The aim is to minimize the risk of flooding to the local area to reduce downstream detriment and visual impact in the community.
