Georgetown County has postponed a public information meeting on the proposed dredging of parts of Murrells Inlet.
The meeting was scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 21 at the Murrells Inlet Community Center.
A new date for the meeting has not been set.
County officials made the determination that a delay until after bids on the dredging project have been received and opened would allow staff to provide better, more complete information regarding the cost and timing of the dredging project.
Bidding is scheduled to close in early August and officials will look at a new date for the meeting at that point, likely scheduling for August.
The dredging project will be funded through Georgetown County’s Capital Project Sales Tax, which went into effect in May 2015, following a public vote.
A main component of the project will address dredging of jurisdictional areas belonging to the Army Corps of Engineers. This component will also include a beach renourishment element, as sand reclaimed in the dredging effort will be deposited on the beachfront at Garden City Beach, where sand is badly needed.
A second component of the project involves dredging of access channels the county is required to maintain.
An option was also given to private landowners to partner in the dredging effort.
