Dredging project that will clean up pollution at the mouth of the River Raisin in the City of Monroe continues and is scheduled for completion by the year end.
The dredging will remove toxic polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from the area, making room for armored cap installation. The dredging, which began in April, comes as the final step in cleaning up pollution from the river.
The removal of the PCBs will take most of the summer and conclude in October.
Following the dredging, the contractor will place sand over the dredged area to control any residual contamination.
The area will be capped with large rocks by the end of December to prevent any remaining contaminants to migrate. The top of the cap will be 4 to 6 feet below the authorized navigation depth in the river.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, long-term monitoring after the project is finished will begin in 2017.
