Construction of the New Brighton Park Shoreline Habitat Restoration Project is expected to begin as early as mid-September 2016.
According to the Vancouver Port, the project will be complete by end of summer 2017.
The key components of the construction will include earthworks, park feature construction and planting.
The project is joint collaboration the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. The project supports the direction of the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation’s Strategic Plan, Rewilding Action Plan, and Biodiversity Strategy.
New Brighton Park presents a significant opportunity to restore coastal wetland habitat on the south shore of Burrard Inlet. Juvenile fish from Indian and Seymour rivers have been known to experience high mortality as they migrate through Burrard Inlet.
A restored saltmarsh would provide productive habitat for juvenile fish and wildlife, including shorebirds, songbirds and waterfowl.
