Parks Victoria conducted a site visit with key users of the Cape Conran boat ramp earlier this week to continue discussions on improving distribution of information and updates surrounding the ramp’s condition.
Parks Victoria’s District Manager for East Gippsland, Will McCutcheon , said that this was a great opportunity to come together and talk through all aspects of the ramp’s management with those who use and value it most.
“There was strong recognition by the group of the ramp’s limitations due to natural forces, and some ideas for improvement were put forward,” McCutcheon said.
“The group discussed Parks Victoria’s approach to clearing the sand that naturally accumulates on the ramp, making launching and retrieval difficult at times.
“Sand clearing is undertaken when a run of favorable boating weather is forecast, but not at times when the wind and wave conditions mean that the ramp will immediately accumulate sand again. Of course we would also immediately clear the sand if it was necessary to address a life-threatening emergency under our normal emergency response protocols, ” he said.
Parks Victoria has also secured funding for repairs to the retaining wall that protects the significant Aboriginal midden adjoining the access road to the ramp.
These works will start within the next few months.
