Initial ground investigation work for the Lowestoft Flood Risk Management Project started last week, according to the Suffolk Coastal District Council.
The work is being undertaken by Balfour Beatty on behalf of Waveney District Council, Suffolk County Council, the Environment Agency, Anglian Water and other organizations who are working closely together to reduce flooding in the town from the sea, rivers and from extreme rainfall.
Expected to take 9 weeks, the work will determine ground conditions in and around the Associated British Ports (ABP) facility and the Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club.
Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Public Protection, Cllr Matthew Hicks, said: “ This is a major project with significant investment from a number of local partners to reduce the risk of flooding and protect vulnerable communities in and around Lowestoft from all forms of flooding. It is important to undertake this work in a measured fashion and whilst there may be some disruption in the short term, the long term benefits are significant.”
In addition to the excavations, surveys of the existing piled walls and jetties will be carried out from floating craft.
