Havant Borough Council has started with the combined maintenance dredge of the Chichester Harbor Approach Channel and nourishment to the Eastoke Frontage, Hayling Island.

The maintenance dredge of the approach channel is underway, with a maximum volume of 25,000m³ of material to be pumped onto the beach along the Eastoke frontage.

The exact location will vary depending on where the material is most needed. The project is proposed to run for one week commencing 26th September, weather permitting.

Once the nourishment material has been dredged the shingle will be pumped onto the beach from the dredger by “rainbowing” ashore.

The Council will also bring in 5,000t of imported shingle to place on the crest of the beach. These works will take place after the dredge, and will last for approximately 2 weeks.

The shingle beach along Eastoke is the primary line of defense against erosion and flooding, however coastal processes are constantly eroding it. Without regular intervention, the densely populated area of Eastoke would quickly become vulnerable to flooding and coastal erosion.
