The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has begun maintenance dredging of the navigational channel in the outer harbor of Green Bay, north of Long Tail Point.
Work started on Monday, October 3, 2016 and will continue for the next six to seven weeks. It is anticipated that all work will be completed by Thanksgiving.
“It is the federal government’s responsibility to maintain the navigational channel, ” explained Brown County Port & Resource Recovery director, Dean Haen.
“Dredging keeps shipping channels, ports, marinas and harbors clear and at proper depths so everyone can use the waterways responsibly.”
The benefits of this particular dredging effort extend beyond navigation.
“When the dredging project is complete, more than 400,000 cubic yards of the material will have been moved to the west island of the Cat Island chain ,” said Haen.
“It’s part of the ongoing effort to help protect and restore wildlife habitat in the area. It also shows we can reuse dredge material that meets appropriate standards for the benefit of our environment. It’s a win all the way around.”
Boaters are asked to watch for dredge equipment in that area.
