Newcastle City Council has started setting up a works site to build a rock seawall at Stockton.

The 140-meter barrier will be buried beneath sand to protect Stockton from powerful storms like the one that devastated dunes and walkways in June.

The retaining wall-like structure is expected to take around four months to complete, depending on weather and tidal conditions.

“The seawall will ensure the long-term stability and protection of coastal assets while preserving the beach’s current amenity and access points ,” Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.

“This is very important work to protect amenity buildings, the carpark and cafe, all of which were under serious threat during that intense East Coast low in June.

“I would ask Stockton residents and beachgoers to be mindful of this and show patience when they see heavy machinery on and around the beach and a construction base to the rear.”

Work will start at the southern end of the beach near the caravan park and move gradually north to the Surf Club.

Beach access will be temporarily altered during construction.
