Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor, Jack Dempsey, said that the Council was looking forward to receiving a briefing from Member for Bundaberg, Leanne Donaldson, regarding future proposals to progress the government’s stated 10 year flood action plan for Bundaberg.
Dempsey said that a Council briefing with Ms Donaldson was scheduled for Wednesday although the community consultations started on Tuesday at the North Bundaberg Progress Hall.
“I believe the Council team associated with producing our Floodplain study can be justly proud of its efforts following an extensive review of both the Flood Study and associated Risk Management and also the Council initiated Community Engagement process ,” Dempsey said.
“The reviews, undertaken by independent State appointed consultants Jacobs, generally found a high quality of procedure and data associated with the manner in which Council undertook its flood analysis and engaged with residents.
“Of course, as is the case with any review, areas of potential improvement are identified and this can only be positive, not only for the Bundaberg Region in any future flood event, but must also assist communities across this State and the nation that are subjected to flood events.”
Dempsey said that what is important is for the State Government to articulate to the community what mitigation measures will be applied taking into account options identified in Council’s flood plain action plan of 2014 and other State identified measures.
“As a Council and as a community we require to know what financial resources will be available to progress these mitigation options under the 10 year plan,” he said.
