Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, will inaugurate the recently dredged Mongla-Ghasiakhali Channel today through a video-conference from her Gonobhaban residence.

During today’s opening ceremony, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate eleven newly procured dredgers.

A significant amount of material was removed from the waterway to make the 31 kilometer river route operational, the Shipping Ministry said in its announcement.

The deeper channel, excavated by Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), will help carry imported goods in large vessels from the sea to Mongla Port.

Shipping Minister, Shajahan Khan, Shipping Secretary, Ashok Madhab Roy, and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Chairman Commodore, Mozammel Haque, will attend the ceremony.
