The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is repairing the Point Lonsdale seawall, which was damaged by winter storms.

Local contractors Elstone Diving Services Pty Ltd started the $47,000 project yesterday.

DELWP Senior Environmental Planner, Frances Northeast, said: “ A series of storms over winter saw high sea levels and powerful waves cause damage to the seawall.”

“The works will include replacing broken or lost capping stones and wave deflectors, and restoring lost mortar between bluestone blocks along the length of the wall.

“As the seawall was built between 1900 and 1947, regular maintenance is essential to prolong its life and maintain its integrity as a coastal protection structure.”

The work is expected to be completed by the summer school holidays, subject to weather conditions.

The maintenance has been funded through the Victorian Government’s Coastal Environment Program, and is supported by the Borough of Queenscliffe.
