Dún Laoghaire Harbor Company (DLHC) has welcomed the An Bord Pleanála decision to grant permission for the proposed new cruise berth.
This decision allows DLHC to accommodate up to 80% of cruise ships that currently visit Dublin Bay.
Eithne Scott Lennon, Chairperson of DLHC , said: “The development of cruise tourism in Dun Laoghaire and its hinterland is recognized in the County Development Plan, the Harbor Masterplan, and the National Ports Policy, which envisages the future of the harbor in terms of marine tourism, marine leisure, cultural amenity and urban redevelopment.
“In addition to the positive economic impact for the area, the commercial revenue accruing to the Harbor Company will be significant, particularly in the context of the need for us as a Company to continually invest in the maintenance and upgrading of the massive infrastructure of the 200- year old man-made harbor.”
The new berth will accommodate cruise ships up to 250 meters in length and will provide many economic benefits to the town of Dún Laoghaire, its hinterland, Dublin and the whole country.
At least 30% of the additional expenditure and resultant employment that the berth will generate is estimated to accrue to the Dún Laoghaire area.
