The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, recently completed a busy fiscal year 2016 that included 254 construction and dredging contracts worth more than $60 million.
“Fiscal year 2016 has been a great year for the Detroit District, the team has worked hard ,” said Lt. Col. Dennis Sugrue, district engineer, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District.
“These projects help the Corps further its mission of providing great engineering services and sustainable solutions to the Great Lakes Region.”
Significant contracts awarded included:
The Underwood Creek project in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, was awarded to Michels Corporation from Brownsville, Wisconsin, for $10.9 million. The project restores approximately 4,000 lineal feet of aquatic habitat, native riparian plant communities and macro-invertebrate and fish spawning areas; it will also improve water quality and enhance water based recreation.
The Gate Automation project at the Compensating Works near the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, was awarded to Koontz Electric Morrilton, Arkansas, $8 million. The project involves installing electric powered motors and automated control system to manipulate gate movement rates and position in a way that more closely mimics natural fluctuations in flow rates resulting in enhanced fish habitat in the St. Marys River Rapids.
The Poe Lock gate replacement project in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, was awarded to Ryba Marine Construction Co. of Cheboygan, Michigan, for $5.2 million. The project replaces the embedded gate anchorages on Poe Lock gates.
The Poe Lock electrical modernization project in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, was awarded to Koontz Electric of Morrilton, Arkansas, for $4.4 million. The project involves replacing and modernizing electrical and mechanical systems associated with the Poe Lock.
The Green Bay Harbor, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, maintenance dredging contract was awarded to Luedtke Engineering Company of Frankfort, Michigan, for $3.61 million to dredge approximately 410,000 cubic yards. Luedtke has dredged approximately 330,000 cubic yards to date.
West Center Pier repairs at the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, was awarded to Roen Salvage of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, for $ 3.1 million. The repairs include filling voids that are causing undermining of the existing West Center Pier, installing a steel sheet pile wall along the face of the structure to prevent future undermining, replacing concrete cap and mooring bollards.
The Grand Haven Harbor south pier repair project in Grand Haven, Michigan, was awarded to Vazquez Commercial Contracting of Kansas City, Missouri, for $2.6 million. The project will demolish, remove and replace concrete surface and structural elements of the pier.
The Pointe Mouillee Confined Disposal Facility project in Berlin Township, Michigan, was awarded to RBV Construction of Detroit, Michigan, for $1.6 million. This project will construct a coarse aggregate embankment with rip-rap wave protection to a cell of the facility.
The Duluth Harbor, in Duluth, Minnesota, maintenance dredging contract was awarded to Marine Tech Lakeside of Marblehead, Ohio, for $1.38 million to dredge approximately 151,800 cubic yards. Dredging is currently on going and to date 85,000 cubic yards has been dredged and the project is scheduled to be complete next summer.
The Embayment, in Duluth, Minnesota, maintenance dredging contract was awarded to Roen Salvage of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, for $1.25 million to dredge 186,243 cubic yards.
The St. Joseph Harbor (inner), in St. Joseph, Michigan, maintenance dredging contract was awarded to Luedtke Engineering Company of Frankfort, Michigan, for $957,200 to dredge 41,085 cubic yards.
The Oakland County Red Run Drain Slope Stabilization project in Warren, Michigan, was awarded to RBV Contracting of Detroit, Michigan, for $928,625. The project stabilizes the side slope of the north bank of the Red Run drain.
