Town of Holden Beach, NC, has just announced that the dredging operations related to their Central Reach Project are scheduled to begin on Thursday, December 15.
“Sand placement will initially occur on the easternmost leg of the project between Jordan Boulevard and 240 Ocean Boulevard East. Subsequently; sand will be placed moving to the west, ” the town said in its announcement.
“Residents and visitors should be aware of heavy equipment on the strand during the nourishment activities.”
The main goal of this scheme is to provide beach restoration along eroding sections of the Holden Beach shoreline sufficient to maintain the island’s restored protective and recreational beachfront and natural dune system.
The proposed plan includes dredging (via a hopper dredger) of approximately 1.3 million cubic yards of material from an offshore borrow area located 1.8 to 3.0 miles offshore of Oak Island.
This material will then be placed onto approximately 22,000 ft (4.18 miles) of shoreline in Holden Beach, Brunswick County.
The estimated cost of this beachfill program is $15 million and the dredge window is November 30th – March 31st, according to the Town of Holden Beach.
