Greenwich Seeks Corps Permit for Binney Dredging

The Town of Greenwich, Connecticut Department of Public Works, is seeking a permit from the USACE’s New England District to remove pond sediment and reduce erosion in Greenwich, Conn.

The work is proposed in Binney Park Pond/Cider Mill Brook at the intersection of South Beach Avenue and Laddins Rock Road in Greenwich.

The purpose of the proposed work is removal of accumulated sediment to arrest shoreline erosion and restore water quality and functional recreational use of the pond.

This proposed work involves the placement of fill and grading below ordinary high water (OHW) for construction of two sediment forebays totaling 16,000 square feet and deepening of the recreational pond to design grades.

This scheme will result in the fill/alteration of 1,315 square feet of palustrine emergent fringe wetland and indirect impact over 139,392 square feet (3.2 acres) below OHW associated with the excavation of 9,500 cubic yards of sediment and grading.

The excavated material will be dewatered within the pond or on adjacent upland areas within the park and reused in upland areas on site or disposed of elsewhere in an approved upland location.

Although deepening is expected to be completed with mechanical methods (backhoe), it may occur either hydraulically or mechanically, as determined by the contractor, USACE said.
