Construction work will begin in the new year to improve flood defenses for people in more than 400 properties in St Asaph.
The announcement comes after planning permission was granted by Denbighshire Council for new and raised defenses in the city.
The contractors, Dawnus, will start work on the new defenses at the end of January, aiming to complete the scheme by the Autumn 2017, announced Natural Resources Wales.
The work will raise the current flood defenses through the city downstream of Lower Denbigh Road.
Meanwhile, work is already underway to replace Spring Gardens Bridge. This will increase the capacity of the river downstream of the city, which will reduce flood water levels in St Asaph.
Until the scheme is completed, short-term measures to reduce flood risk will continue on the River Elwy. This includes installing temporary flood barriers when required along a 150 metre stretch of the river.
