Northern States Power Co., also known as Xcel Energy, has agreed to fund the final phase of cleaning up contaminates at the Ashland Lakeshore Superfund Site.
Under the agreement filed earlier this week with the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin in Madison, NSP, a subsidiary of Minneapolis-based Xcel Energy, will design, construct and implement the cleanup of contaminated sediments in Chequamegon Bay.
The project, expected to cost about $42 million and take 1-2 years to complete, will include dredging contaminated sediment out of the bay.
The 40-acre polluted site located on the shore of Lake Superior in Chequamegon Bay in the city of Ashland was used for various industrial purposes for more than a century and contains legacy toxins such as benzene and naphthalene.
The site has been the subject of legal wrangling for more than a decade.
