DEME’s 7.950m³ LNG-powered trailing suction hopper dredger, named the Scheldt River, was launched today at Royal IHC’s shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel.
This impressive ship is the second dredging vessel in the world that is equipped with dual fuel engines and capable of operating in full LNG mode.
The 3.500m³ TSHD Minerva, launched on December 3, 2016 at Royal IHC’s shipyard in Kinderdijk, is the first vessel of this kind in the world.
These dual fuel (diesel and LNG) dredgers, powered by Wartsila engines, have a ‘Green Passport’ and a ‘Clean Design’ notation, complying and exceeding with the strictest international emission requirements.

“Both the Scheldt River and Minerva will comply with the strictest international and local environmental regulations.”
IHC’s Executive Director Shipbuilding, Arjan Klijnsoon , added: “To further optimize fuel consumption and reduce emissions, IHC has equipped this vessel with new innovations, driven by market developments and customer demand.”
