The $4.37 million Morro Bay Harbor dredging project that will keep the harbor operational and safely navigable is underway, reported the city officials.
According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District, the project will remove approximately 240,000 cubic yards of clean sand and gravel from the entrance channel, sand trap and main channels at Morro Bay Harbor.
The dredged material will be placed upcoast in the EPA-approved disposal area between Morro Bay High School and Azure Street for beach nourishment purposes.
For the project, the dredging contractor, Ahtna Design-Build Corp is using a hydraulic/cutterhead dredge that will pipe material through the bay and down the beach to the disposal site.
The City of Morro Bay expects that the entire project should take approximately 2-3 months to complete, depending on production rates.
