The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority – Iloilo Fish Port Complex (PFDA-IFPC) has sought the endorsement of the Sangguniang Panlungsod (the Legislatures of City Governments) for a possible funding by the Department of Agriculture of two big projects.
According to IFPC Manager, Engineer Elmer Figuracion, these development programs, worth around $2.6 million, include the extension of existing breakwater and dredging of the harbor basin.
Reynaldo T. Calayag, Engineer IV at the PFDA-IFPC, said that the proposed dredging operations in the harbor basin will cost around $700.000.
The current depth of the berthing area is 5.5 meters as it became shallow through the years due to siltation. The shallow water makes it difficult for fishing vessels to navigate.
On the average, the fish port accommodates 50 to 70 vessels a day.
The extension of the breakwater by another 160 meters is necessary because the existing 190 lineal meters could not fully protect the berthing area. Big waves during bad weather pose danger to fishing vessels docking in the area.
The extension project will cost around $1.9 million.
