President of the Republic of Maldives, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, inaugurated the official development of a new runway at Velana International Airport (VIA) in Hulhule yesterday.

During the ceremony, the president was accompanied by the managing director of Maldives Airport’s Company Ltd (MACL), Adil Moosa, the chairman of Beijing Urban Construction Group, Mr. Chen Dai Huaand and the president’s cabinet ministers.

The administration has budgeted more than $800 million for the development of VIA, according to the president office’s latest announcement.
