The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) of Thailand has temporarily stopped the dredging operations on a waterway at the Hua Hin-Pattaya ferry pier.
This dredging work is being undertaken by DMCR, with the main goal to create a channel for the new ferries operating across the Gulf of Thailand between Hua Hin and Pattaya in Chon Buri.
According to the Bangkok Post, local fishermen complained that the barges dropped the dredged material only 800 meters from the shore during the first three days of dredging. They claim that this action could adversely affect the marine habitat, ecological system and artificial coral reefs in the area.
After receiving their complaint, Bannarak Sermthong, the Director of the 3rd Marine and Coastal Resources Office, on Monday led officials to the area on a fact-finding investigation.
Pending the result of the investigation, the department had ordered the suspension of dredging operations.
