The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District, is making good progress on the Willoughby Spit and Vicinity Coastal Storm Damage Reduction project in Norfolk, Virginia.

USACE and its contractors from Great Lakes Dredging and Dock Company have so far completed 23% of the works, placing some 271,943 cubic yards of sand along the beach.

According to the Corps, the sand used for the project is being dredged from the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay.

The sand is part of a $34.5 million project to reduce storm damage risk to infrastructure along a 7.3 mile stretch of waterfront, which is susceptible to damage during coastal storms.

Once complete, the beach will be 60 feet wide and slope up to 5 feet above mean low water.

The Corps expects that the dredging and beach building operations will be completed by late May.
