The Willoughby Spit and Vicinity Coastal Storm Damage Reduction project in Norfolk, Virginia, is moving into the fifth week of dredging and beach fill operations, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District.

USACE reported that this week a third dredge will be arriving on the site as crews start preparations for placing sand along the western most portion of the project area near 15th View St.

Since the beginning of the operations, the contractor for the project – Great Lakes Dredging and Dock Company – has placed 373,699 cubic yards of sand and is about 31% complete on the project.

The $34.5 million project that will reduce storm damage risk to infrastructure along a 7.3 mile stretch of waterfront will be completed by late May.

When finished, the replenished beach will be 60 feet wide and slope up to 5 feet above mean low water.
