Southwind Construction Corp. has just completed dredging of the Shallotte Inlet crossing on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AIWW) in Ocean Isle Beach (NC).
According to the company officials, dredge Wilko was used to move over 35,000 cubic yards of sand, placing it east of Shallotte Boulevard. Also used for the operations were workboats Proud Mary and Miss Leanne.
The dredged material has been placed on the east and west sides of Shallotte Blvd. for a distance of up to 800 feet on each side of the island.
Apart from this project, the town is also working on a terminal groin scheme. The town’s Mayor Debbie S. Smith announced that the project consist of the construction of a 750 linear feet terminal groin structure, which includes a 300 linear foot anchorage system.
The 3,214 foot section of shoreline located directly west of the terminal groin will be pre-fiiled with 264,000 cubic yards of beach compatible material obtained through the use of hydraulic dredge methodologies from the Shallotte Inlet.
The project is being located off of East Third Street on the beachfront and within the Atlantic Ocean on Ocean Isle Beach.
